Yeovil V.I Bowls Club

We are a small group of visually impaired people together with some sighted helpers  meet regularly at Yeovil Bowls Club  to enjoy a game of Lawn bowls.

We meet each week in Yeovil but our members come from various areas in South Somerset and from across the border in Dorset.

We are a registered charity officially formed in 1993.

We play our bowls throughout the year, out of doors in summer (weather permitting) and indoors during the winter.

People from age 16 and with any level of visual impairment from partially sighted to registered blind are welcome.

Members are also welcome to bring along a guide or helper although we have members available to help.

Club History

A small number of visually impaired people had been bowling at the Yeovil Bowling club for 5 or 6 years when it was suggested that an official club be formed so that members could take part in the growing number of national visually impaired bowling tournaments being organised by the English National Association of Visually Handicapped Bowlers. (E.N.A.V.H.B)

With the help of Julie Shorrock (Social Worker for the Visually Impaired) and members of the Yeovil Bowling Club, together with financial support for transport by Somerset County Association for the Blind, the Yeovil Visually Impaired Bowls Club was officially formed in 1993. The club began with 7 visually impaired bowlers and 4 sighted helpers.  A  committee  was formed and fundraising began.  Membership gradually increased and the club became registered as a charity in 1998.

The members and staff of Yeovil Bowling club  continue to give their support.  Members of the visually impaired group are  welcomed as invited guests and the full facilities of the club are available on one morning each week throughout the year.

please note:

The National Association is now known as: Visually Impaired Bowls England. (V.I.B.E.)
